I moved to the beachside in 2011, and my love for it has only grown since that time.
Here’s what I like the most about living on the beachside.
One of the first things that comes to mind when I think about the beachside is that it’s unpretentious.
Unlike a lot of highfalutin beach towns, nobody over here seems too concerned about keeping up with the Joneses.
If you go out to eat you could be sitting next to a doctor, a lawyer, or a Fortune 500 CEO, but you may never know it because everyone is in flip-flops and T-shirts, eating peel-and-eat shrimp, and drinking $1.50 draft beer.
Watching the Moonrise
Watching the sunrise is great, but for me the moonrise is what does it.
There are typically 3 or 4 nights a month that are prime-time moonrise viewing, and it’s simply breathtaking to see the moon’s light reflecting on the water.
My Allergies are Better
I’m not sure which pharmaceutical company makes Claritin, but I used to pretty much keep them in business. I’ve dealt with allergies all my life because of all the pollen here in Florida, and its especially bad certain times of year.
But since moving to the beachside my allergies have greatly improved. If I take Claritin, its maybe 2-3 times a year as opposed to every day like I’ve done in the past. This isn’t something I even thought about at all before moving to the beachside, but I’m very happy with the result.
I’m not positive why my allergies have improved so much, but I’ve read a few articles that say the salt air has something to do with it.
Whatever it is, I’ll take it!
I’m More Active
It’s almost impossible to look out my window and see people walking, running, riding their bikes, surfing, paddleboarding, or kayaking and not want to get involved.
I don’t get to get out there as much as I like, but if the tide is out and I’ve got some time to kill, you can usually find me getting in a long walk or a short run down there.
My favorite food in the whole wide world is fried shrimp, which is a real problem because I am somewhat allergic to it.
I can eat it with only minor complications (minor hives) if it is fresh and has not been frozen. This pretty much rules out eating it at any of the chains like Red Lobster and others.
I can’t tell by taste how fresh it is…it all tastes good to me. But I can definitely tell you within 20 minutes of eating it whether or not it was fresh.
Luckily there are plenty of seafood restaurants here on the beachside that pride themselves on serving only fresh seafood, so I’m able to get my fix at least once a week.
Great Breakfast Options Too
While we’re on the topic of food, I’ve never been a big fan of breakfast. I think this goes back to childhood when my parents would make me eat really boring and healthy stuff before sending me off to school.
But here on the beachside we have several fantastic breakfast places. Most of them are only open until 1 or 2 in the afternoon but you can get breakfast anytime until they close.
It’s hard to choose a favorite but if you put a gun to my head, I’d say Crabby Joe’s at the pier where you can sit out over the ocean and watch the waves crash below you through the cracks in the floor. We like to ride our bikes down there on Saturday mornings when they have a guy whipping up made-to-order omelets.
It’s kind of funny because we never went there before moving to the beachside, but we see people from our old community on the mainland there almost every time we go.
Always Something New to See
It’s never a dull moment over here on the beachside, especially during the big events like Bike Week and race week.
But even in between, there always seems to be something going on. Some new group of people in town enjoying everything the beachside has to offer.
I can remember one day the very first year we moved over here and waking up to thousands of Jeeps parading by outside. So cool!
Several times a year you’ll even catch a glimpse of the Goodyear blimp flying by.
Your Worries Roll Right Off Your Back
When you are driving home over the bridge after a long day of work, you just feel like you are entering an alternate universe.
Whatever troubles or worries you had that day seem to disappear as you’re driving over the bridge.
